Further information courtesy of Nick Beeley: Charles was born in Offerton, near Hathersage, where the family farm was located, and he enlisted in 1905. He had a brother George who had served during the Boer War, and according to a family story, at the outbreak of the Great War, George disappeared out on the moors and was never found.
